Living with an Ecuadorian family

I think living with an Ecuadorian family is improving my experience of Ecuador (and the Ecuadorian culture).

For an example when you come home one day and your family is making humitas. And therefore you decide to participate, and all of a sudden you know how to make some Ecuadorian food.
Humitas is ground corn (and of course we started with the corn on the cob), mixed with baking powder, eggs, flour and spices. It also contained cheese. Afterwards the dough is packed in corn leaves and steamed for half an hour. And then you can eat!

Or when your host family comes home and tells you that they are going to the neighbor to kill a pig (they seemed a bit surprised, when I told them that I wanted to come).
And is was really interesting, because everyone was helping with slaughtering the pig. The small kids were watching and the bigger kids were learning what to do and how to clean and cut up the pig afterwards.
I definitely think that the children who have this experience will have a healthier conception of meat. Because even though we know that there is a connection between animals and meat it seems like people in Denmark believe that meat grow in the supermarket.

Jeg er overbevist om at det at bo hos en ecuadoriansk familie giver mig en bedre oplevelse af Ecuador (og den ecuadorianske kultur).

For eksempel da jeg kom hjem en af dagene og min værtsfamilie var i gang med at lave humitas. Og derfor besluttede jeg mig selvfølgelig for at deltage. Og lige pludselig vidste jeg hvordan man laver humitas!
Humitas er formalet majs (vi startede selvfølgelig med majskolber), blandet med bagepulver, krydderier, mel og æg. Derudover indeholder det også nogle gange ost. Efterfølgende pakkes dejen ind i majsblade og dampkoges i en halv time. Og så kan de spises.

Eller når din værtsfamilie kommer hjem og siger, at de skal over og hjælpe med at slagte naboens gris (og de blev en lille smule overraskede da jeg annoncerede, at jeg ville komme med dem).
Og det var virkelig interessant at observere. Alle hjalp til. De små børn observerede, imens de større børn lærte hvordan man slagter grisen, renser den og fjerner indvoldene. 
Og jeg tror bestemt at disse børn får et sundere forhold til kød end vi har som danskere. Selvfølgelig ved vi at kød kommer fra dyr, der engang har været levende, men alligevel har mange en idé om, at kød gror i køledisken i supermarkedet.
